Musicology Annotation << Back Calendar folklore of the Eastern districts of the Novgorod region: genre and musical typological aspects Korolkova Inga V. The research focuses on the calendar and ritual folklore of the Eastern districts of the Novgorod region as an important part of the folk song traditions of the region. The article uses folklore and ethnographic materials recorded in the Novgorod region by various collectors in 1960–1990. The article focuses on the presentation of the results of the expedition activities of the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) state Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. The purpose of the article is to present the results of genre and musical typological research of Novgorod calendar folklore. The author offers a genre classification of folklore texts that function in the system of an annual cycle: ritual calendar folklore; genres that combine folk and Church song traditions; genres associated with calendar rites. As a result of musical-typological analysis, intonated shouts, short songs, chant-recitation forms and melodized forms were identified. The dynamics of distribution of folk texts in the annual cycle is typical for many Russian calendar and song systems, as it is a gradual increase in the importance of the musical component from winter to spring and summer time. The Eastern Novgorod version of the calendar-song system focuses on the spring period of the calendar, which contains the greatest variety of musical forms and genres. The specifi city of Eastern Novgorod calendar folklore is that one poetic text in one ritual function can be embodied using different types of musical utterance – from an intonated shouts to a melodized form.
