«Six epigraphes antiques» by Debussy through the prism of the of choreography |
Pridanova Elena V.
Piano cycle «Six epigraphes antiques» by Debussy is considered from the perspective of involvement of the composer in the sphere of choreographic art of his time. The author of the article immerses this opus in a wide historical-cultural context that allows to vividly reveal plastic images of the musical text embodied in the spirit of Art Nouveau style on the border of «natural» and «conditional». In the light of this four pieces from the «Six antique epigraphs» - «Pour un tombeau sans nom», «Pour que la nuit soit propice», «Pour la danseus aux crotales», «Pour l’egyptenne» - are seen as a miniature encyclopedia of «phenomenological body» of the fin de siècle. The musical logic of pieces coincides with the aim to convey the living, pulsing, breathing body in a freely unfolding flow of his movement. A deep and subtle feeling of the ancient cosmos with its materiality brought to life an updated musical language and a new framework allowing to capture the specific reality of living psycho-physical integrity in all the richness of its manifestations.
Keywords: Debussy, fin de siècle, «Six epigraphes antiques», the phenomenology of the body, choreography, Art Nouveau style.
