Musicology Annotation << Back «Summertime» George Gershwin: a Comparative Analysis of interpretation by Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holliday Violetta V. Nevalyanaya Two American singers Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holliday began their career simultaneously, but each of them has developed her own individual performance style. For example, a lullaby of Clara «Summertime» from the opera «Porgy and Bess» by George Gershwin can be traced in the work of both singers. Ella Fitzgerald in the performance of «Summertime» adheres to the original version of the composition, only adding some touches typical for jazz music and its performing art. Billie Holliday sound brings operatic aria to the American popular ballad. The singer uses the declamatory manner of presentation of the musical material and gets a pop song to perform in a club.
