Musicology Annotation << Back Study of Znamenny Chant in the Old Believer’s Schools on the Base of Ancient Russian Traditions Tatiana F. Vladyshevskaya The article is based on the materials of expeditions to the old believers in 60–70th years of the 20th century. Their chant schools saved ancient Russian traditions of church chant teaching and learning. This process was based on two pillars – oral church practice and written tutorials named Azbuka. Znamenny chant traditions were transmitted from teacher to learner. Knowledges unequipped to neumatic writing were saved by oral memory, for example, archaic intonation system of the 3rd glas (ikhos) or melismatic transpositions. Usually chant tutorials were used as handbooks for study. They existed in Ancient Russia from 15th century, later old believers continued their usage with new addition teaching sections. These skills were formed long ago and later saved by old believers and used for the learning process.
